Mechanics question Ek=Ep?
A car of mass 1000kg is travelling at 30m/s on flat surface. If there is an average force of friction 200N acting on the car and its engine is turned off, what would be the vertical height of a ramp that would bring the car to a stop?
I can calculate the height of the ramp if there is no friction (1/2mv^2)/mg = height
but I have no idea how to work this out since friction is involved. Can anyone help?
Hey Jim, we do need to use the friction because the question before this asked us to find the height if there was no friction!
Answer:
Think in descending exponential terms. Devise the originating factor for the amount of friction you have built up and desire to compensate for, and then overcome. Then multiply that into your mass*velocity factors. When you reduce that to a 0 over 10 enumerator, all that remains is the velocity over time coefficient. Work those two together until you deduce the angle you seek.
