Chapman Denied Early Release
There are a few people whose criminal offenses are so infamous that it is unlikely they will ever again see the light of day outside the confines of prison. Some examples include Sirhan Sirhan, Manson, or Chapman. Chapman was the individual who brutally shot John Lennon to death at point blank range on Dec. 7, 1980 outside Lennon's apartment building, the Dakota. Chapman has been a candidate for parole various times already, and became eligible again this year. The opinion of Chapman on the part of the parole board has not changed. He was rejected parole again. Few people want to see him go free.
No early release for Chapman
Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life, as outlined by ABC. He began his sentence in 1981, after pleading guilty to the second degree murder of John Lennon. He was first eligible for parole in 2000, however it was rejected. He was eligible for early release again this year, which he has been each and every second year after his first instance of eligibility. For the sixth time, his parole was not granted. The early release board did not believe the most effective interests of the community would be served by his release. His parole has been opposed at each turn. Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, has strenuously opposed his release every time he has been eligible.
The madman in the rye
One of the disturbing things about Mark David Chapman is his obsession with "The Catcher in the Rye," by J.D. Salinger. His motives for slaying of one of this century's greatest composers of popular music had a lot to do with the book, and he often compared himself to the book's protagonist, Holden Caulfield. Caulfield is an angry teenager, rebelling against the "phoniness" he finds in adult life and institutions. The book is associated with more than one murderer, though it has always been a popular work that is nevertheless required reading in some schools. The attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan which was carried out by John Hinckley Jr., an additional rabid fan of the book. Chapman is considered to have mental health issues which are significant, so it's not as though a normal person will be driven to kill by reading this book.
Maybe to your advantage
The murder of John Lennon by Chapman was one of the most infamous criminal offenses in the last few decades. As outlined by CNN, the parole board was not happy with Chapman's state of mind. That is certainly a good reason not to parole him. He is up for parole again in August of 2012.
